In the Spotlight! Who’s Graceman?... story by Annemarie Baviello
If you have posted a question to the UK community in the last few years, chances are you received your answer from this QuickBooks expert. I found myself asking, “Who is this Graceman fellow?” So I am sure others have as well.
This is Gordon Archer. Gordon is from the small village of Kineton, just south of Stratford-Upon-Avon, the well-known birthplace of Shakespeare. Gordon is a retired engineer with an in-depth background in programming computer controlled machinery, as well as in networking these complex systems. Gordon has a vast knowledge of QuickBooks, and while getting to know Gordon, I have come to learn he is a seriously smart, driven and witty man.
Gordon was introduced to QuickBooks in 2002, while he was keeping the books for a friend who was starting a new business venture. Originally, they started with QuickBooks on a standalone system. The business has grown and QuickBooks has evolved to a networked multiuser system. Gordon has just recently upgraded to QuickBooks 2010, and says he likes the company snapshot so much he has preset it to be his QuickBooks opening page.
I asked Gordon what he fancies most about QuickBooks, and he replied “Its simplicity and ability to roll back and correct errors. It’s a very flexible package and you can tailor it quite easily. It’s especially good at starting from small beginnings and grows into the complete reporting package as you learn to use it.”
In the Community, Gordon is known as “Graceman”, and replies to multiple questions per month. He has answered over 3169 questions over the past few years and has received 132 well deserved thank-yous from other users. His passion for QuickBooks and solving other users’ issues is truly inspiring. When we asked him if we could spotlight him in the community, he replied, “Why would anyone be interested in an old retired engineer that finds computers, accountancy & QuickBooks interesting and a window to the world?” Well the truth is, Graceman, you are all over the boards, talking about the very things people are there to learn more about. For his contributions Graceman has received a co-moderator status and is also the top contributor on the UK leader board. His answers can be taken to the bank and cashed in for gold. He is a strong voice in the community and part of the glue that holds it together.
In his free time, Gordon can be found exploring the depths of Stoney Cove, a popular scuba diving site located in an old granite mining quarry that has filled with natural spring water. He also likes to sit down for a flick from time to time. A good old-fashioned Western like Rio Bravo, anything with John Wayne, and of course Star Wars are always a go! Recently, he enjoyed Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”… “It really makes you think about what we are doing,” he said.
When his wife Rita is not looking, he also likes to take over as head chef in the house. A modest man, Gordon likes to look forward; he does not boast about his past achievements. He enjoys anomalies and was often the “go to” for such things in his employment years.
I encourage everyone on the QuickBooks forum to share what you know. We have a lot of really intelligent, really interesting people using our software. People just starting off; people who have been using QuickBooks for years. The community is open to all types of questions and if Graceman answers one of your questions, be sure to send him your thanks!
