The Non domiciled tax debate

There has been a fair bit of discussion on Twitter from Duncan Bannatyne & fellow ex TV Dragon Doug Richards regarding non-domiciled tax status especially in light of the revelation that conservative party peer Lord Ashcroft is a 'non-dom' and doesn't pay tax in the UK.

All of us hate paying tax don't we?

So my question is given the chance would we do it? The savings are pretty high.

I am happy to disclose that for personal reasons given my family background and where i was born, whilst the entire Capital Business Media Group is UK based and pays tax here and we are also in the process of setting up a charitable foundation too I personally don't pay tax in the UK and i don't feel guilty in that fact.

For me I am not worried either way, and to be honest as long as it is legal it is none of my business about others affairs, and vice versa.

My issue comes with Lord Ashcroft getting favours in the UK as a result of 'playing it' and in public life you should be as white as possible, not cryptic, not dishonest, just straightforward and honest. This issue has only blown up because he has held back deliberately from the questions.

Guy Hands at TerraFirma was stright forward about him going 'non-dom' and it all went quiet. Why the deception in public life?

Marc i think the difference is because in public life you should be doing all that you can for UK PLC etc and taxes paid go towards public services etc.

Where as Guy Hands etc wants to retain as much of his money as possible on the back of the high level of risk that he places it under to facilitate future investments.
