Vat on small gyms /leisure centres

I run a small gym/hair/beauty in a fairly poor area. we are competing against council run leisure centres that use part of my massive business rates and govt funding .

They pay no VAT and refurb regularly at 1/4 million plus.

I am slowly going under and my 14 employees will be out of a job after 30 years of innovating community fitness

where the fairness in this and who will help or care?

Hi Lorraine,

You are right that there is an inequality at this moment in time. That said there are a number of EU grants available for businesses that are providing community services that are publicised but have a fairly high payout level so definately worth speaking with your local council on this. You can also technically make yourself tax exempt by commiting to the requirements listed here http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageLibrary_PublicNoticesAndInfoSheets&propertyType=document&columns=1&id=HMCE_CL_000115#P84_8496 That is how the local council centres do it.

Hope that helps. If you need some more advice feel free to drop me a line.
