Will the budget influence votes?

With the General Election fast approaching, on behalf of Intuit UK we want to know whether you think the March budget will directly influence people’s votes in May?

I think it will and I think that how much the chancellor pays attension to that is a difficult balance. Some poeple will be very selfish in how they view the budget and look to see what is in it for them and this may change their vote. Others will look to have a longer term view and will not want to see any popular short term measures that are not in the long term interest.

Budgets always have an effect on elections but this time around it cannot be a give away budget and for that reason alone it is very interesting to see how the budget is delivered and the reaction to it. Recent budgets have been very technical and this washes over most of us. Will this one be the same??

Whilst i think that the budget may affect how some floating voters think on May 6th (as that is pretty assured as the date) it will make very little difference to business. Plus if there is either a hung parliament or the Conservative party win there will be another budget towards the end of June.

In the real budget i predict:

VAT to rise to 20% but not on all things.

A shift in Stamp Duty.

A change in the non-dom rules.
